Deep Beyond #5 sees our group escape to a mysterious location but where do they end up?
PLOT AND STORY
In issue #4 Paul, Jolene and Lucas flee from the anti terrorist group and find themselves at the entry to some type of doorway. Issue #5 sees our group step through the doorway which is a portal to a different place. I use the term place because I like the way Mirka Andolfo and David Goy build up the mystery around where they end up. Is it a planet? Is it an alternate dimension? All these questions make you think about what’s going on and the possible opportunities.
ARTWORK
The layout and structure of this issue makes it my favourite of the series. Each page is full of multiple panels packed full of interesting details and great artistic character illustrations. Artist Andrea Broccardo has drawn realistic looking characters and ghoulish looking monsters throughout this series and complimented by Barbara Nosenzo’s colours makes a very stylish looking comic series.
The pages which stand out in this issue are towards the middle when our group is being held prisoner. They find themselves held caprice within a super advanced energy prison which creates some peculiar yet fun scenarios for our team. These pages are also the first time we meet some alien creatures which are very different and unique looking to this series and break away from your standardised thoughts about aliens.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This issue stretches the story out to new possibilities which is something I feel needed to happen. While I have enjoyed this series very much, it was taking its time to get anywhere, but now I feel confident things are moving at a new pace. We are exposed to a lot in this issue yet we don’t learn much because everything is shrouded in so much mystery which demonstrates good storytelling towards what I hope will be a decent pay off in the end.
